Connection & Belonging For Readers

Do you remember how it felt, having someone read to you when you were young? Sitting on Grandma’s lap, or Dad holding up the pictures while he read to you at bedtime? It always felt magical. Did you do this with your kids? Did you feel a bit disappointed when they got older and wanted to read on their own? Reading with your kids doesn’t have to end just because they want to be independent. In fact, it is a wonderful way to stay connected and we can help. A group of parents and their daughters meet monthly, usually on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., throughout the school year. We have a potluck supper and discuss a book chosen the previous month.

Our conversations center around thoughts and feelings evoked by the book, literary aspects and author’s choices when writing the story. Open to all parents/daughter teams who would like to join, the Reading with Our Daughters group mainly read mainly middle-grade genre books (ages 9 and up). The evening usually includes a craft or activity inspired by the book. In the past we have buried a time capsule, made a couple of podcast episodes (available on our website) and made goddesses while on a Zoom call with an author. Please contact Brian at brian@stjohnsjackson.org for more information or simply come join the group. We are so grateful that this book club is facilitated by local author, Nanci Turner Steveson.

2024 Calendar: January 3, February 6, March 12, April 23, May 14, and June 11.
