It is all about relationship

It is all about relationship. This week we had the privilege of hosting 20 young people – from ages 11-18 and 6 adults from the Wind River Indian Reservation (WRIR). They spent the night in the Underground, then woke up to a breakfast of eggs, bacon, pancakes, and fruit lovingly prepared that morning by a great crew of St. John’s parishioners who arrived at 7:00 a.m. on a Wednesday to help offer true hospitality and welcome. I watched as the kids rolled into Hansen Hall, wiping sleep from their eyes, and our people jumped in to get them juice and coffee and anything else they needed. We had the opportunity to sit and talk with both adults and youth, beginning to get to know one another a little bit. I was so proud and grateful for the love that is the driving force of our church.

This did not happen overnight. The Episcopal Church has a history of oppression and assimilation of indigenous people, and a long lineage of broken promises that continues to this day. Trust is hard won, and fragile. Brian and I visit WRIR monthly to give Roxanne Friday, the priest who serves Our Father’s House and St. David’s Mission, a much needed Sunday off. Over time, we have built true relationship with the people of the Arapaho and Shoshone Tribes. Brian and I treasure our time at the WRIR and the relationships we are building. It has taken 4 ½ years of consistently showing up and being present to begin building trust. Wednesday morning, we saw fruits of that most loving labor. It is all about relationship.

In 2023, I began Gathering Women, a monthly worship service and dinner for women. I am amazed by the commitment of the women who come regularly, and bring new friends to share in our worship + fellowship = "womanship". I see women who are new to Jackson or St. John’s being welcomed, building relationships, and finding their place in our community. And all of this translates into a group of women who laugh together, and graciously and eagerly care for one another. It is all about relationship.

I have come to believe that this is our secret sauce at St. John’s. We know how to offer wonderful hospitality. We know how to show up, be present, and listen. We know how to be community. We know how to foster loving relationships. People don’t really come to St. John’s for the liturgy on Sunday morning – although I’m sure they enjoy it. People walk in our doors and feel a sense of welcome, energy, and love that speaks to them. That is why they come back. That is why I come back. You are my people. And I am so blessed to have this community to call home and all of you to call family.

Blessings to you all,

Mary
